A bit about Brian...

Brian is incredibly honoured to be the Director of Ever Active Schools.  Brian brings a great passion for school and community health to the position and believes in the power that schools have in building healthy communities.  Brian grew up in North Vancouver before calling Edmonton home in 2001 but he still cheers for the Canucks.  Brian graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelors of Physical Education and Recreation (BPE) in 2002 and then a Master's of Science from the Department of Medicine (MSc) in 2008.  Through his Master's degree, Brian led the Healthy Hearts Research Study that has shown the great strides that can be made with partnerships and support from the entire school community.

In 2012, Ever Active Schools has made a focus on, “having a conversation” with teachers, schools, parents students and partners about healthy schools.  The Ever Active Schools vision of this social media initiative is to develop an active engaged online community where users feel comfortable to exchange information and stories on school health. Through these stories other groups will be more informed and inspired to inject wellness into Alberta school communities.

Brian believes that finding the right recipe for school health involves teamwork, communication and bringing everyone together to build health into our everyday environment.  Brian is an avid runner, competing in provincial road races, coaching athletes, and volunteering with mass participation physical activity based events.  Brian is gearing up for a successful Vancouver Marathon, May 6th 2012.

In September of last year, Brian was thrilled to introduce his new daughter, Lendel Jay to the Ever Active Schools’ team.

School Coordinator

Joyce Sunada
E-Mail

A bit about Joyce...

Joyce is in her 4th year as the Schools Coordinator with Ever Active Schools.  She holds a Bachelor Degree in Education with a Phys. Ed Major from the U of L.  She has been an Educator for over 25 years and was an administrator for four of those.

Joyce has spent many hours travelling to various schools in Southern Alberta with EAS and one consistent message she shares, is that it is important for school staff members to “Walk the Talk”.  By this she means the adults in the school need to role model a healthy active lifestyle.  Role modeling is a very powerful way to empower others to improve their lifestyles she explains.

In the past three years Joyce has worked with a number of Comprehensive School Health partners.  She enjoys finding common ground to build relationships and further strengthen the CSH movement.  Joyce loves the following quote from Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has”.  This quote sums up the efforts of the partners EAS has across the province.

Joyce loves to be active.  She recently completed the Honolulu Marathon after training for 8 months with the U of C Marathon running group.  Her plan is to train for and complete a Sprint Triathlon this spring.
