Health Assessment Tool for Schools (HATS)

Healthy school assessment tools have the potential to identify programs and practices, assess needs and provide direction for schools to positively influence health behaviours related to physical activity, healthy eating and mental well-being.  EAS Members are required to complete the Health Assessment Tool for Schools (HATS) on an annual basis. This feature is available online each April and May (beginning April 2009) and all EAS Members and Associates will receive an invitation email with login and pasword information. Each Member school champion will also complete a short series of questions designed to help EAS meet the needs of member schools.
HATS 2010 will be available in April of 2010.

Hard Copy HATS                    HATS Facilitation Guide

The HATS is a series of checklists that help school communities define practices and programs that positively influence health behaviours related to active living, healthy eating and mental well-being. The results from these checklists are intended to be used to guide the yearly Action Plans of member schools and to help them follow a health promoting school (HPS) approach. The HATS should be completed by all members of your Ever Active Committee. A facilitation guide will be available to assist the champion with implementation, or contact the EAS office to book one of our staff to come and help!

The EAS Action Plan

The EAS program is currently working with many Alberta schools who are Members or Associates.  Each school has the opportunity to assess in the Spring (Health Assessment Tool for Schools) and then submit an Action Plan.  EAS keeps these plans on file (pdf) and is able to share ideas and strategies provincially.
The Action Plans submitted demonstrate the unique needs and programs of the school community. One of the valuable features of the program is that is allows schools to determine their needs, and then to plan actions (using the Health Promoting Schools approach) to reach their goals.  Click here to download the ACTION PLAN template.
