Together, these trends make it harder for children and families to choose walking, biking, and wheeling for everyday trips to school and around their community.

Changes That
Active & Safe Travel helps communities make walking, biking, and wheeling an accessible and enjoyable choice. By bringing schools, families, and community partners together, it supports local action that makes active travel safer and easier for everyone.
Ever Active works alongside schools and communities to build practical, community-led solutions that support walking, biking and wheeling.
Through Green Communities Canada's School Travel Planning process, we help communities understand local travel patterns, identify priorities, and develop action plans. Children and youth are involved every step of the way, sharing their experiences and helping shape solutions that reflect the needs of their community.
Across 18 participating schools in 2025–26, Student Travel Surveys showed:
- Walking to School: 2%
- Biking & Wheeling to School: 5%
- Private Vehicle Use: 4%
of teachers reported that active school travel helped students develop the skills and confidence needed to become leaders within their school community.

The Active & Safe Travel Impact
Calgary - Since 2019, Ever Active partnered with the City of Calgary to support 78 schools through Active & Safe Routes to School.
Edmonton - Through the National Active School Streets Initiative, Ever Active is bringing School Streets to two Edmonton schools in partnership with Green Communities Canada.
Medicine Hat - In partnership with the City of Medicine Hat, Ever Active is introducing an Active School Travel pilot project to one school in 2026-27.
